I must be insane

Dylan has put JournalSpace up for auction at eBay.

For some reason unknown to me, I'm tempted to bid on it.

I'm thinking this must be a symptom of insanity because I have absolutely no experience running a web site. While I have years of software development experience, very little of it would be relevant to owning and running a site like JS.

In the ideal world, I'd like to join a consortium of people who would buy and own JS. However, it's always problematic to coordinate a group effort - so that idea may be even more 'round-the-bend than the idea of simply bidding on JS.

  1. My boyfriend, Wheelie, was thinking of taking over JS before it went on ebay, then he had so much mess with out relatively small forum, he probably changed his mind! lol

I think there are many Js'ers who would be willing to pitch in and help anyone seriously thinking of taking the plunge. I really hope it does come back, but in its old format!

  2. I'd probably just stay here because starting over again, again, isn't very appealing to me...but, hmmmm, well, maybe not...

Dorrie---I'm wondering if it actually could be brought back in it's original format...given that all the data was destroyed. I can't imagine the work involved in starting a thing like that from scratch...mind "bloggling" to me.

  3. Seems like a huge undertaking, but a noble one!

  4. If the price is over $2.99, I ain't gonna bid....

I'd rush back if you got it, M! Ditto for Dorrie. I'm thinking both of you understand the concept of "back-up...."

  5. Dorrie - Our fellow JSers do seem like very helpful folk.
JadedJ - I would think the ability to easily import/export your blog would be a required feature.
Kate - I'm sure it would be a huge undertaking. (Hence the title of my post. :)
Mr. S - Thanks for the vote of confidence. However, as the commenters over at SlashDot pointed-out -- backing-up a live database can be a challenge -- that's why the commercial solutions mentioned were multiple $K in cost. :(

  6. The custom software that Dylan wrote isn't included, so it would be more like Wordpress than the old JS. If anyone wanted all the old JS features, he/she would have to write it from scratch as Dylan did. Or wait until sometime in the future when he makes it ready for release to the open source community.

It would be worth putting it back together, though.

  7. Well, I have no doubt that somebody will buy it. Lots of new techy's out in Cyberville in these days.

  8. Doug - It would be worth putting back together. Though as you pointed out, it could take a lot of work. If I get more serious about this idea, I will need to get a much better handle on that aspect of it.

  9. Judy - Yes there are lots of techy's, but I hope it's a techy with the JS spirit that winds-up with it.

  10. What to do with JS??? I think that only Dorrie could bring it back the way it was.

  11. It would be a huge job. I would like to see who buys it and what they do with it. Something good I hope!

  12. KIT, you buy JS and I'll gladly help you run it! Whatever it takes, count me in.

  13. KIT, I found you! I agree, if someone would buy it (maybe you?:) then we could all pitch in and help. I couldn't help moneywise but I'd help however I could. Surely someone has the knowhow to write a code like Dylan did. It was the absolute best place out of all the ones I've tried. I sure miss it. :(

  14. As of this evening, the price is now up to $2400, which is out of my price range. At this point it would have to be a group effort.

Pastor Larry - I agree that Dorrie and her team have done a spectacular job in the last week, demonstrating all the qualities we'd like to have in the proprietor of the future JS.

Nan - No doubt the effort could be significant.

    SS - Thanks for volunteering.

Betty - I'm glad you found me too! It took me several days to get over the shock of the JS crash and begin to take any action to start a new blog.

  15. I think 90% of us would be willing to help in any way we could, but it would be a lot of work. :-( Hopefully someone will bring the JS format back up. They really do have an awesome site. I can't imagine how awesome it would be with all the glitches fixed. I would say it would be a real awesome site.

Who knows, only in my dreams. *Sigh*
